We also assist with scheduling related office visits and diagnostic procedures. Our clinical coordinator serves as a point of contact through all phases of your child’s treatment.

We are affiliated with the Komansky Children’s Hospital at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center, a top ranked children’s hospital in New York City in the US News & World Report Best Children’s Hospital Survey.

Microtia & Atresia Care

Microtia is a condition where a child is born with a small or missing ear. It can cause hearing loss and affect appearance, but early care and treatment can make a big difference.

Aural atresia is a missing ear canal, which happens in about 70% of people with microtiaPeople with aural atresia will need to use a device that can help bring sounds to their inner ear to allow their brain to develop connections to their hearing system on the affected side.

For the first several years of your child’s life, our main focus is on their hearing and development. This is especially important for children with aural atresia to allow them to be able to use both of their inner ears for hearing. Our audiologists, speech therapists, and education specialist will work to ensure that your child has all the support they require.

When your child is ready for ear reconstruction, we weigh several factors to determine what reconstructive option would be best for them. The best option and the timing of reconstruction may depend on your child’s hearing needs, their overall growth, the size of the ear with microtia, as well as your child and family’s preference.

Deciding on the Right Treatment

Every child is unique, and their care plan should reflect their needs. Your child’s care team will work with you to develop the best strategy, focusing on:

  • Hearing rehabilitation to support development.
  • Timing of surgeries or devices to align with your child’s growth and readiness.
  • Cosmetic and functional goals to enhance their quality of life.

Lifelong Benefits of Early Care

  • Improved Communication: Early hearing rehabilitation helps your child develop strong speech and language skills.
  • Better School Performance: Hearing support allows children to participate fully in classroom activities.
  • Boosted Confidence: Hearing well and having reconstructive options can help children feel more confident as they grow. External ear reconstruction can also help with wearing devices that rely on ear stabilization such as glasses and ear loop face masks.
